Notes on "Rose"

LL: Rose is an incredible guitar, custom built for me by Santa Cruz Guitars. She's perfect—the best instrument I own. Rose is an OM (“orchestra model”) which means she is a bit smaller than full size, but her sound is huge. She was about a year old at this point in the residency. I could really feel her sound opening up, so this song came pouring out.

NK: One morning, I woke up very early to an email from Lisa with a beautiful guitar part attached. The file name was simply “Rose,” but I didn’t understand what that meant until she explained that her guitar’s name was Rose (Lisa names all her guitars). In the spirit of bluesmen who write songs for their named guitars, I wrote this one in Lisa’s voice, for Rose. A lot of the lyrics I wrote on Captiva took shape very early in the day, almost at dawn, before I had gotten out of bed or really woken up—and before I had entered into language, which was very important. I remember hearing Lisa’s recording of “Rose” in this half-asleep state, and tried to capture all these early morning ideas with as little mediation as possible.
