about

For six weeks at the end of 2018, Nina Katchadourian and Lisa Liu were among the nine fellows at the Rauschenberg Residency on Captiva Island, FL at the former home and studio of artist Robert Rauschenberg, who lived there from 1970 until his death in 2008.

Captiva is a long, skinny barrier island just offshore of mainland Florida in the Gulf of Mexico. Its west side has long sandy beaches and ocean waves; its east side is lined with mangroves and hopping with bird life. You can occasionally see manatee on the bay side, and dolphin on both. The first signs of human presence date to 6000 years ago. By 500 A.D., the Calusa were living there, and by the start of the 18th century, most were dead because of persecution or disease as the result of European settlement. These days, the island has a small population of year round residents, and many tourists.

When you’re a fellow at Rauschenberg you inhabit a world apart. The residency sits on a swath of land that goes all the way from the east to the west side of the island, like a belt. A jungle road connects the two sides and this land is thick with tangled trees and vines, having been spared the development that has altered much of the island. We rode our bikes at all hours of the day through this enchanted tunnel of foliage, from our studios to the rooms where we slept. The residents at Rauschenberg were given time and resources to dig into their creative work in this protected space. And because Robert Rauschenberg frequently collaborated with musicians, dancers, choreographers, and other artists, we were encouraged to be open to the points of connection we might find with other residents, too. This album is the result of taking up that opportunity.
