Notes on "My High School Nemesis"

LL: Nina sent me an email with an unaccompanied version of this tune. It sounded familiar, and indeed, Nina revealed it was “My Funny Valentine” with alternative lyrics. I wanted to go old school with the guitar on this tune, in the style of Barney Kessel.

NK: I wrote these lyrics many years ago, thinking about all the seniors at my high school who were so much bolder and cooler than me. I had been singing my alternative lyrics over karaoke versions on YouTube for years, but playing this with Lisa, who is such an accomplished jazz player, completely changed the feel of the song.
