Notes on "It Might Be a Relief"

NK: Residencies spoil you. You get used to beautiful scenery and wonderful food, prepared for you; you spend a lot of time in your own head; you keep a schedule that revolves around your creative work in any way you want. You probably become a bit unbearable, actually. And eventually, the goodbyes begin to loom. As we were all getting our heads around the upcoming departure and the dissolution of the small community we were part of during this little while, I thought about the lyrics to Cole Porter’s “Every Time We Say Goodbye” and decided to write a song as a response, or maybe even a retort. Lisa and I worked out the arrangement very quickly and recorded it quite late at night, taking advantage of a resigned, slow mood induced by the fatigue of weeks spent working so hard.

LL: From a jazz guitar perspective, it was so much fun to arrange this and to find all the chords and harmonic movement underneath the vocal melody. Nina said she wrote a jazz song as a musical gift to me, and it was.
