Notes on "Eight Waves"

NK: Part of starting a collaboration with someone you’ve only just met is getting acclimated to their past work and their influences. We did a lot of listening sessions; it fed our ideas, and helped us see where our musical common ground lay. We played some old songs for each other too. “Eight Waves” was a song I wrote in 2005, inspired by an article in Cabinet Magazine about the eight waves of bugs with lovely Latin names that eat your body after you die.

LL: Nina casually played and sang this song for me and I recorded it without her realizing. I built the arrangement out of multiple layers of electric guitar parts that transformed the timbre of the song. One day during lunch I was sitting next to Leila, one of the staff members at the residency. She mentioned that she played Tambour, an Iranian instrument that she’d been studying for a few years, and showed me a YouTube video. I instantly thought that Leila on tambour would be a perfect addition to the very end of the song, in the place where Nina said she was looking for a “swarmy” sound
