Notes on "Landfall"

LL: One night about four weeks into the residency, I was feeling homesick and low, so I skipped dinner and wanted to be alone. I had been working on a piece where I wanted to “break” harmony without it being perceptible. I wanted it to resemble the passage of time: things change six months or a year down the line even though you go through the same routine day after day and don’t notice it’s happening. This tune starts in C major and modulates through four keys. By the end, we’re in E major. It took a whole evening to solve the musical puzzle of this song.

NK: Red Tide crept into local waters a few weeks after we arrived. We couldn’t swim in the gulf anymore, and the air stung. I took a long walk on the beach one day and saw a mother and her kid standing over a seagull lying on the beach, flat on its belly with its wings spread out, looking dead. I joined them and saw that the bird was just barely alive, poisoned and limp. They said they had seen it wash ashore. After a hesitant attempt to grab it the gull flew out to sea again, weak and wobbling like it was drunk before washing ashore a second time. This time, I wrapped it firmly in a hotel towel, and ran back the long stretch of beach to find help at the residency. By foot, by golf cart, and by boat, the Laughing Gull was brought to a rescue center. I was told not to get my hopes up, but the gull survived and a week later he was strong enough to be released.
