Notes on "Chapel"

LL: Some songs just arrive effortlessly, without much thought at all. This is one of them. I just had to sit at the piano and be ready for it. It’s one of my favorite songs to play from the album.

NK: Biking around one day, I discovered the tiny, charming Captiva Chapel, formerly a one-room schoolhouse. A poster on their information board moved me for the way it expressed an attitude of inclusivity and acceptance and I thought it might be fun to sing in church the following Sunday with some of the locals. A few of us went, and happened to be there on the day of a baptism: a little baby was dipped into a giant clam shell which served as the baptismal font. Reverend John Cedarleaf made us feel so welcome that we returned again to sing Christmas Carols, an event so popular that seats were placed outside to accommodate the crowd, with the Reverend speaking from the pulpit to those indoors and to those outdoors, through the window, in turns. The little chapel was located right next to the Captiva Cemetery, where stone grave markers placed into the sand were often covered with arrangements of shells and plastic flowers.
